3BIO was represented at European Congress of Biotechnology (ECB) 2026 in Antwerp this week, where two of our team members took the stage to present their work. Lisanne Terrie presented "Promise or puzzle? Assessing whether NGT laws truly ease gene editing" as part of Symposium 8: Gene Editing for Crop Improvement. The presentation assessed whether the EU's proposed New Genomic Techniques (NGT) framework will genuinely simplify the regulatory landscape for gene-edited crops, or whether significant legal and practical challenges remain. Patrick Rüdelsheim presented the regulatory and biosafety findings of the EU-funded Nymphe project, a Horizon Europe initiative developing system-driven bioremediation strategies for contaminated soils, sediments, groundwater and wastewater across European sites. The presentation addressed how existing EU frameworks, such as the Directive 2009/41/EC on the contained use of GMOs and the new EU Biotech Act, apply to the micro-organisms, enzymes, plants and genomically edited strains used in environmental remediation. Great to see 3BIO's regulatory expertise represented across both crop biotechnology and environmental biotechnology at this year's congress.
