Most people get far less light during the day than their biology actually needs even in spaces that feel adequately lit. WELL's Light concept addresses this through 2 preconditions and 7 optional features.
The 2 preconditions sets the floor. Light Exposure requires occupants to receive daylight or sufficient electric light to support circadian function (our body's internal clock), measured at eye level.
Visual Lighting Design then sets brightness tailored to the activity, alongside uniformity and glare control that determine whether the lighting feels comfortable to work under for any sustained length of time.
The 7 optional features cover:
● Circadian Lighting Design. Bright, cool-toned light intensity at eye level during the day, designed to reinforce the body's biological clock. The specs reads in EML (melanopic lux) rather than conventional lux, because the wavelengths driving circadian response are not the same as those driving visual perception.
● Electric Light Glare Control. Shielding, fixture brightness limits, and positioning that keep direct glare out of the visual field. The downstream effect is reduced eye strain and visual fatigue across long working sessions.
● Daylight Design Strategies. Window sizing, glazing and floor plate depth - the design decisions that determine whether daylight reaches the back of the room or stops at the first row.
● Daylight Simulation. Modelling how much daylight reaches each workspace at the design stage, and verifying the strategy performs across the full year.
● Visual Balance. Brightness ranges for ceilings, walls and floors, ensuring light distributes evenly through the space rather than collapsing into harsh contrasts between bright and dim zones.
● Electric Light Quality. Colour rendering, colour consistency between fixtures and flicker thresholds. Poor rendering makes skin look grey and finishes look odd, while imperceptible LED flicker triggers headaches and eye strain in sensitive occupants.
● Occupant Lighting Control. Individual or zonal control over lighting levels, recognising that needs vary by task, time of day and personal preference.
WELL's Light concept rewards integrated design. The interplay between daylight access, electric supplementation, glare control and circadian timing means optimising one feature in isolation tends to compromise another, which is why projects pursuing this concept seriously tend to involve the lighting designer earlier than conventional fit-outs.
