Only 31% chose the payment decision layer ✔️ We asked banks how they should prepare for #AI in #payments. Among the options was control of the payment decision layer. It came fourth. Which was interesting. Especially after a speech called “Why Banks Must Own the Payment Decision Layer.” At #TBSCONF26BXL, we ran a live audience vote with bankers and the payments ecosystem. So we asked the room: What should banks prioritise to prepare for this shift? The answers were: • Analyse customer payment behaviour — 47% • Review partner strategy in light of strategic customer focus — 44% • Build an open integration infrastructure — 34% • Control the payment decision layer — 31% • Open up for merchant initiatives — 16% • Something else — 3% The top priorities make sense. But they also reveal the gap. Banks are preparing around the payment decision: customer data, partnerships, infrastructure. The harder question is whether they will still influence the decision itself. If AI agents become the layer that recommends, prioritises, routes, or executes payments, visibility is not enough. Banks will need a position in the decision layer. So the real discussion is this: what will make #banks relevant if they no longer own the moment of payment choice?
