I think every engineer should learn the principles of double-entry.
Double entry databases are massively under-used and under-appreciated in the tech community. They get used in accounting, but every single DE bookkeeping software I've seen only stores transactional data in the ledger.
With Financica, we took a different approach: Use the ledger as the source of truth and derive everything that can be derived from that.
For example: There's no such thing as a "Paid" status on an invoice. An invoice's outstanding amount can be derived from the ledger, and accordingly, its status can be derived as well (unpaid, overdue, paid, partially paid, overpaid...).
We took the same approach when creating a depreciations module. Every single accounting tool creates assets and depreciation policies, then syncs the ledger to those. Instead, we derive everything from the ledger, storing only the policy separately.
Put simply, this is the better approach and every accounting tool should consider adopting it.
