Heavier, the alpha-emitting particles travel only 50-80 micrometers in tissue. That short range forces all their energy into a dense track, a Linear Energy Transfer (LET) tens of times higher than that of beta-emitting particles such as Lutetium-177. There, the magic happens. The resulting DNA double-strand breaks are often difficult for cancer cells to repair, leading to cell death.
This highly localized energy deposition helps minimize irradiation of surrounding healthy tissue.
Actinium-225, with a half-life of 9.9 days, leads the TAT field, while Astatine-211, with a half-life of 7.2 hours, is emerging as one of the most promising next-generation alpha emitters. Other radionuclides are also advancing through clinical trials for oncology and other applications.
