Sometimes I donโt travel like a free radioisotope. Sometimes I wear a metal coat.
Some radioisotopes can't bond directly into an organic molecule. They need something to hold them in place, with a chelator. The chelator will grip the radiometal tightly, attaches to the targeting molecule and make sure Iโm keeping in place through the body until I reach the right target.
Some famous radiometals on stage:
[โถโธGa] as PET imaging clinical standard proven everywhere, with a half-life of 68 min.
[โถโดCu] as antibody imaging with a slower biology and half-life of 12.7h.
ย [โถโทCu], with the same chelator, same molecule as [โถโดCu], and a half-life of 61.8h. You can do imaging with one and therapy with the other as theranostic pair.
