That was the real obstacle for McBride when they set out to automate internal transport. Not the will to do it, the material. An AGV can't safely lift something that shifts as it moves. The fix wasn't a smarter robot, it was switching from trays to boxes first. Once the load stopped moving on its own, automation became possible.
From there, our AGV Taurus took over the blow moulding department: 29 machines, 58 pick-up points, each with its own priority. A 3D camera checks every pallet before the forks touch it, so nothing gets picked up misaligned or unstable, exactly the risk that had ruled out automation before. With no fixed lanes and routing that adapts on the fly, the AGV handles 58 different destinations without needing a rigid layout built around it. Fast LTO charging keeps it topped up between runs rather than parked on a charger.
McBride still produces the same volume, just with fewer people doing the moving.
