With all the headlines about sold-out eclipse glasses or tips on the best viewing spots, it’s clear: across Europe, people are getting ready for the solar eclipse tonight. But behind the scenes, grid operators are also making preparations.
The European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E), the umbrella organisation for Europe's grid operators, expects solar production to drop by up to 9.7 GW across Europe under clear skies. Spain and Germany will feel it most.
Solar power now accounts for around 13% of Europe's electricity mix. Although the impact is not dramatic, a brief dip like this shows why it matters to capture and use that production well. The next eclipse is a while off, but storing solar energy to use it later is always a good idea. ☀️
