Some solutions by lab automation are surprisingly simple.
When implemented consistently, they add value without operator burden.
Sample ID tracking is one of them.
Whether you use barcodes, QR codes or RFID tags, the first automated action should always be to identify the sample and verify it against the worklist or LIMS assignment.
From that point on, the software can continuously record both the sample’s status and location. The most important tracking events are gate actions, such as transferring a sample to a new vial or well, where the original sample ID must remain linked to the new container.
The audit trail becomes even more valuable when it also captures verification data, like: Gravimetric confirmation of reagent additions, Measured incubation temperatures and independent process checkpoints.
An effective sample tracking system includes:
- ID check-in and check-out
- Time stamps
- Gate transfer records
- Independent task verification
- Straightforward review and reporting
These capabilities are valuable also outside regulated laboratories. In manual workflows they often require significant effort, while in an integrated automation platform they are part of the process.
