Looking forward to this fireside chat with Earth Plus during New York Climate Week.
It connects closely to something I’ve been thinking and writing about lately: carbon debt.
Every tonne we emit today adds to that debt. And waiting until 2040 or 2050 to deal with emissions we already know are hard to abate means carrying that debt for decades — potentially with “compounding interest” feedback loops as warming puts additional pressure on forests, soils, water systems and other natural carbon sinks.
That is why I find the discussion around BVCM — Beyond Value Chain Mitigation — so important.
It shouldn't be an alternative to reducing emissions. It is about acting in parallel, on top of it: reduce aggressively inside the value chain while taking responsibility for emissions we cannot yet eliminate.
And perhaps we should think even broader than carbon. As we discussed recently around soil health, resilient ecosystems cannot be reduced to tonnes of CO₂ alone. This is just a tiny part of the planetary system and is not sufficient to stay within the #planetaryboundaries.
Done well, BVCM can help shift the conversation from simply buying carbon credits to investing in resilient functioning ecosystems — carbon, biodiversity, soil, water and resilience together.
Looking forward to exploring exactly that with Earth+, Deloitte and Fujitsu in New York.
