Medtech has a fundamental inventory dilemma:
Everyone wants less of it.
Nobody can afford less availability.
Commercial leaders are under relentless pressure to release working capital, cut excess stock, and protect margins.
At the same time, hospitals expect the precise device, implant, or instrument to be available the moment a procedure begins.
This creates an uncomfortable strategic question:
How much inventory is actually "too much"?
Finance measures inventory by quantity and book value.
Operations experiences inventory through availability, utilization, timing, and risk.
Closing that gap requires answering five operational realities in real-time:
• Which stock is actively protecting revenue?
• Which stock is directly protecting a surgical procedure?
• Which stock is sitting completely idle in a field dead-zone?
• Which stock can be instantly redeployed to match surge demand?
• Which stock is creating holding costs without creating availability?
Answering those questions creates a fundamentally different definition of inventory efficiency.
In Medtech, the most cost-effective inventory isn't the stock an organization carries the least of, it’s the stock an organization can confidently put to work.
