Every year we go through the hardware in our own office, and this year it turned into a real question: should we run our own models here rather than paying per seat?
The economics look inviting. We have good fibre, and we do not pay for the electricity. Then you start listing what you would actually have to learn to make it work, and the honest answer is that nobody has written that playbook yet.
Banks have run their own on-premise instances for years, for the unglamorous reason that they will not put their network on somebody else's infrastructure. Models are heading the same way, which is exactly why it is worth exploring early rather than late.
