We are pleased to share a new insightful publication from our network members, Dalibor Dolezal and Tanesh Kumar, recently published in the journal TEME. The review article, titled "Social Engineering and the Limits of Cybercrime Prevention: A Review of Social, Educational, and Technological Challenges," provides a critical look at why social engineering persists as a leading pathway to cyber harm. Key insights from the study include: Beyond "Awareness Deficits": Susceptibility is shaped by roles, organisational routines, and socio-emotional dynamics rather than just individual knowledge gaps. The Limits of Training: Generic awareness programs show limited long-term sustainability when they are weakly reinforced or poorly integrated into daily workflows. Technological Escalation: AI-enabled deception and deepfake impersonations are increasing attacker-defender asymmetry by reducing the reliability of surface-level cues. A Systemic Approach: Effective prevention requires layered, socio-technical solutions, including workflow-based controls (e.g., second-channel checks), verification norms, and usable-security interventions.
