"You rarely do just finance, especially if you're in a leadership role."
That's Aidana Zhakupbekova, Rydoo's COFO, speaking on the Finance Chief podcast earlier this month about the ever-changing role of the CFO.
The pace of the job is a large part of why staying in your lane is out in 2026. In Deloitte's Finance Trends 2026 survey, Walmart controller David Chojnowski describes a cadence that has changed outright: scenarios his team once ran monthly are now modelled and analysed almost daily.
At that speed, there's no window to go looking for operational context after the you've got the number, which is probably why 30% of the finance leaders Deloitte surveyed named advanced scenario planning as the capability they most need, ahead of everything else on the list.
Similarly, Surgent's 2026 outlook on the CFO role reaches this conclusion: technical competency is where a finance executive starts now, rather than where they finish.
