The CFO role

The CFO role is the question of who owns a company's cash, capital and reported numbers, and how far that mandate stretches past the ledger into strategy.

Overview

A chief financial officer runs three machines that get collapsed into a single job title. The first is the ledger, where statutory accounts, tax and consolidation produce numbers that have to survive an external audit. The second is capital, meaning how much cash the business holds, how much of it is borrowed, and how much a regulator or a lender forces it to lock away against risk. The third is decision support, where forecasts, scenarios and investment cases get priced before anyone commits money. Bartel Puelinckx states the capital machine as arithmetic: KBC moet voor haar operationele risico's vandaag 2,5 miljard een kapitaal opzij zetten, while over the last ten years the maximum annual loss was €29 miljoen, and met 2,5 miljard kapitaal kunnen wij meer dan 40 miljard kredieten verschaffen. Alessandro Mazzocchetti compresses the second machine into a rule of thumb, Profit is an accounting opinion and cash is a reality, and Nikos Manalis names the standing tension in the job: to make a cost cutting it's easy, but to be able to combine growth with efficiencies, I think that this is the main challenge and opportunity that we have nowadays as CFOs.
