- When a custody wallet connects to a trading venue, the order path and the control path split. BitGo's Hyperliquid integration last week is a clean example of that design and a sensible one. My view is that control can also travel with every order, and that it no longer needs to cost anything a desk would notice: about 81 µs per signature. We ran the numbers: https://lnkd.in/eRvNaKKC Custody protects the key. Fortkey protects the transaction.
- Keeping the signing key in plaintext on the trading box costs 52μs per signature. Sealing it in an enclave with policy enforced on every signature: 133μs. The whole price of doing it properly: about 80μs, still under a millisecond at p99.9. Jochem Hoes ran 5 million signatures per payload type to get this number. Full tables and the caveats in the first comment.
- We ran 20,000 signatures through AWS KMS. Every single one took longer than a millisecond. The same payloads through our HFT Vault: 133 microseconds median, still under a millisecond at p99.9, with policy enforced on every signature. Jochem Hoes published the full benchmark: methodology, every percentile, and the caveats. If you sign anything latency-sensitive, it's worth ten minutes.
- Today CrypDefi becomes Fortkey. The rename is the boring part. What's interesting is the reason why: the product became very clear about what it is. A self-custody wallet for trading firms, fast enough for algorithmic execution, controlled enough to hand to an auditor. Fortkey says that. Fortified keys, built for speed. For clients and partners: same company, same entity, same product, same people. Everything carries over unchanged. Details: https://lnkd.in/e5rMWacn
