Frenay worked in international business development and sales before becoming a tech entrepreneur, spending years working around the world, from China over Sri Lanka to Singapore. At that time he was a Startups.be ambassador and a Telenet Idealabs mentor, working mainly in the Mobile, Internet and Telecom domains.
The BeTech initiative was launched in March 2014 by Kristoffer Tjalve and started on Twitter. Frenay joined Tjalve in the initiative in November 2014, after which Facebook became the community's main channel for moderated content and guidance aimed at Belgian tech entrepreneurs. He describes BeTech as a by-and-for-entrepreneur community that turned into the Belgian Tech movement and reached 7,300 members. BeTech is bottom-up and entrepreneur-driven, built around a pay-it-forward principle, and runs the BeTech Community Group, BeTech First Tuesdays, BeTech Circles, BeTech Remotes, BeTech Missions, a BeTech Medium channel and year-end parties. In early April 2018 Facebook recognized BeTech as one of the leading meaningful groups in Europe, and the brand was relaunched that month as The Belgian Tech movement. By the end of November 2019 the foundations were laid to turn BeTech into a philanthropic association. The community found its home in BetaCowork in Brussels.
