What comes after grid congestion? A financing and coordination challenge. Last week, we looked at what happens when the energy transition moves faster than the development of the electricity grid. ⚡ A recent Reuters article highlights the next layer of this challenge: across Europe, grid development is not only a technical issue, but also a question of financing, planning and coordination. EU governments have scaled back plans to use national funds for cross-border electricity grid projects, while still supporting more centralised planning of network expansion. This matters because renewable energy, electrification, data centres and industrial demand all depend on grids that can handle new patterns of production and consumption. At the same time, large infrastructure projects take time. That is why smarter use of the existing grid is becoming increasingly important. Data-driven energy management, smart metering, local energy flow analysis and flexibility solutions can help reduce grid stress and make local energy systems more efficient.
