🔋 Research meets innovation! We're pleased to highlight the successful completion of Berke Karaman, PhD's thesis at ULiège, carried out under the supervision of Professor Nathalie Job within the NCE (Nanomaterials, Catalysis & Electrochemistry) laboratory part of Chemical Engineering - ULiège ! The project focused on improving 𝗟𝗶-𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗱𝗲𝘀 by depositing 𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗼𝗻 𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀 onto 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝘅𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗹𝘀. Silicon offers an exceptional theoretical capacity, but its practical use is limited by poor electrical conductivity and significant volume expansion during cycling. Through this collaboration, ICS contributed its expertise in 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗺 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 to develop silicon-coated carbon xerogels. The results speak for themselves: every deposition strategy investigated outperformed the pristine carbon xerogel, demonstrating the potential of surface engineering to enhance next-generation battery materials. 📖 The full thesis and its results can be found here: https://lnkd.in/eXFwyqGP The two figures below illustrate some of the key outcomes of this work: 🔹 The first image is an SEM micrograph of the carbon xerogel/Si composite, showing the silicon nanoparticles successfully deposited onto the carbon surface. 🔹 The second image compares the electrochemical performance of the different anodes. CX (orange) corresponds to the pristine carbon xerogel, while the remaining curves represent the ICS-treated samples. All treated materials exhibited improved overall performance compared with the pristine reference.
