I am so surprised when smart people block me because I don't agree with their opinion. It's a matter of expectations, I guess. We expect specific behavior from smart people. We expect people with certain qualities to also have others. We expect people who are experts in one field to excel in others.
I am also very surprised when smart people use personal insults as arguments. It's probably the same mechanism. We expect smart people to also be decent people.
