We use BrightAnalytics to follow our financial numbers. It's the authoritative source, and it's good at what it does.
But I don't want to hand everyone a login and tell them to go find the KPI they need.
Not because the numbers are secret. I want the team to know how we're doing on our main KPIs. That's the point of having them. But financial data is where access matters most, and "everyone gets everything" is not a permission model.
Same story with HubSpot, Google Analytics 4, Google Search Console and every other specialist system we run. Each is authoritative inside its own walls. None can answer a question that crosses two of them, and most real questions do. Pipeline against revenue. Usage against churn.
The place where data originates does not have to be the place where a decision happens.
Specialist systems stay the source of truth for their domain. On top sits a shared knowledge layer that holds the definitions, joins across systems, enforces who sees what, and carries all of that into the product, into Slack, into whatever assistant people already work in.
The finance tool owns the financial data.
The analytics layer owns what "committed ARR" means when someone asks, who is allowed to know, and where they can ask it.
