We just published the most thorough comparison of decision analysis software we could build — and three things we found along the way say a lot about this category.
First: the last industry-wide survey of decision analysis software ran in December 2020. Nothing since.
Second: the seven tools we compared have fewer than fifty public reviews between them — total, across the major review sites. A single mainstream analytics product can carry thousands. And a striking share of those fifty reviewers are academics, not practitioners.
Third: documentation is the real differentiator nobody talks about. Some vendors publish full manuals and help indexes on the open web. One ships its current help only as a downloadable file format that Windows blocks by default.
The practical conclusion: in this category, star ratings cannot carry a purchase decision. Documentation you can read before buying, and a trial you can actually evaluate in, are worth more than the ratings.
So we wrote the comparison we wished existed: 29 criteria across seven tools, every claim traced to the vendor's own material, screenshots of each product, and what users actually say — sourced and quoted. Our own ModelChoice is in it, held to the same evidence standard as everyone else, including the cells where it loses.
