Your solar asset produces the most electricity at the exact moment that electricity is worth the least. On a business case, that is not a technical detail. That is a line item.
In Belgium, the day-ahead price turned negative for more than 520 hours in 2025, a record, up from 408 hours in 2024 and 222 in 2023. Those hours cluster in spring and summer, the exact months your panels produce most. For a PV-only site, the value of each generated kilowatt-hour erodes precisely when volume peaks. The regulator has a name for it: solar cannibalisation. The more you produce, the less each unit earns.
A finance view reframes the question. The metric is not installed capacity or headline yield. The metric is how much of your production you convert into avoided cost, and how much leaks away at a negative price.
Three levers protect that value:
- A BESS that stores midday surplus and releases it into the evening, lifting the effective value of every solar kWh
- Power-to-heat that absorbs cheap midday power as process heat instead of exporting it at a loss
- A best-in-class EMS that dispatches both against day-ahead and imbalance prices, every 15 minutes
The financing side matters as much as the physics. We deploy the full system through a PPA or Energy-as-a-Service, off balance sheet, with no upfront CAPEX. The business case rests on the value recovered, not on the capital deployed.
A PV-only setup exports its surplus into a falling price. An integrated system converts that same surplus into avoided cost and evening value.
