EDDIE as a backbone for Flexible Connection Agreements
Flexible Connection Agreements are becoming an operational requirement. Article 6a of Directive (EU) 2024/1711 requires Member States to create frameworks for TSOs and DSOs to offer flexible connections where network capacity is limited.
The challenge is not only regulation but operation: system operators must communicate operational envelopes securely and at scale, while active customers and market actors need to act on them without bespoke integrations.
In the EDDIE demonstrator, EDA Energiewirtschaftlicher Datenaustausch GmbH worked with EntArc.eu and Digital4Grids to pilot a standards-based answer. EntArc.eu and Digital4Grids provide the technology and consulting services that make the model operational, scalable and maintainable.
- EDA operates a shared FCA capability for multiple connecting system operators.
- EDDIE and AIIDA provide a secure, non-discriminatory Digital Customer Interface for system operators, established actors, aggregators and energy communities.
- Standards-based EMS plugins, IEC 62746-4, CIM, MQTT, Kafka, identity and consent services create an interoperable path from operational envelope to customer action.
The golden cut is clear: the system operator defines the envelope at the connection point; the customer-side EMS keeps operation within it.
Demonstrated in Austria with Netz Niederösterreich GmbH and Energienetze Steiermark GmbH, and in France with Enedis (https://lnkd.in/duNVmQRr), the model is now moving into operational scale.
In Project INSIEME Task 4.4, the Austrian system operators, EDA and FlexiData GmbH are scaling the FCA infrastructure and easy-to-integrate Digital Customer Interfaces.
The standards-based EDDIE FCA Management Model can be tried and tested in any EU Member State.
