- One physio tests quadriceps strength. Two weeks later a colleague retests the same patient. The numbers don't match. Did the knee get worse, or did the protocol change? This is easily fixed by agreeing on one test protocol and a clear test battery per injury and per milestone, so every therapist in the team tests the same way. We wrote down how clinics set that up, and why starting with a few tests is fine. Free article: https://buff.ly/PKk6E7g
- Athletes who waited at least 9 months after ACL reconstruction and passed strength and hop tests before returning had an 84% lower reinjury risk in the Delaware-Oslo cohort (Grindem et al., 2016). We wrote down the tests we use at each stage, from Return to Move (about 13 minutes, early rehab) to Return to Sport High Load with the full hop battery, strength testing and the ACL-RSI. Including the LSI cut-offs, and where LSI on its own misleads you. Free article: https://buff.ly/tyDN081
- In a U13 squad, two athletes born in the same month can be four years apart in biological age. The early maturer is taller, faster and stronger, and gets picked. The late maturer ends up on the bench and often quits before their body catches up. Prof. Sean Cumming (University of Bath) has worked on this with the Premier League, the FA and British Gymnastics. In this 29-minute keynote from 2024 he shows what bio-banding looks like in practice and how clubs can evaluate young athletes more fairly. Free to watch, no login needed:
