Overview
Van Hecke completed a master's degree in physical engineering at the University of Ghent in 2004, followed by a master's degree in biomedical imaging with a specialisation in neuroimaging at the University of Antwerp. He obtained his PhD in 2009 at the Vision Lab in Antwerp with research on diffusion tensor magnetic resonance image processing for improved quantitative group studies, and then held a joint postdoctoral research fellow position at the universities of Leuven and Antwerp. He is author or co-author of more than 50 scientific publications. The wider icometrix founding group included professors Paul Suetens, Frederik Maes, Stefan Sunaert, Jan Sijbers and Paul M. Parizel. He sat on the icometrix board of directors alongside Steve Rietiker as president of the board, Herman Verrelst, Jay D Miller, André Oosterlinck, Katrin Geyskens of Capricorn Venture Partners, Frederic Wohlwend of Forestay Capital and Heather Roxborough of Optum Ventures. Under his leadership the company launched icompanion, a symptom-tracking app for people with multiple sclerosis, on World MS Day in June 2020, and icolung, chest CT software for COVID-19 built with research groups at VUB and KU Leuven.
Wim Van Hecke is a co-founder and the chief executive officer of icometrix, a Leuven company whose AI software analyses brain MRI and CT scans. The company was founded in 2011 as a spin-off of the Belgian universities and university hospitals of Leuven and Antwerp. The icobrain software quantifies brain structures and abnormalities for multiple sclerosis, dementia and Alzheimer's disease, stroke, traumatic brain injury, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease and brain tumours, and by October 2019 was in use in more than 120 hospitals and imaging centre networks worldwide. In May 2019 the company raised $18 million in a round led by Forestay Capital alongside Optum Ventures and existing investor Capricorn Venture Partners. In November 2024 icobrain aria was cleared by the FDA as the first AI computer-aided detection and diagnosis solution for amyloid related imaging abnormalities. On 10 September 2025 GE HealthCare announced an agreement to acquire icometrix, with financial details not disclosed; Van Hecke was quoted in the announcement as icometrix CEO.
