At Olpas, a concentration measurement instrumentation company we have a line of sensors for the measurement of iron sludge concentration. Iron sludge/slurry, also known as iron oxide sludge or ferric sludge, can for example be a byproduct of drinking water production from water that contains iron and iron oxides. Luckily, there are various use cases for iron sludge in different sectors. For example, it is used in biogas production to reduce toxic emissions in digesters. For these applications, managing the flow of iron sludge dry solids (%DS) content is important. At the supply side the filling up of iron sludge buffers is important, on the demand side a known quality or content of sludge is required. For this, we made various sensors: - The Olpas Tentacle sensor has a special 'iron sludge' version which is suitable for commonly found concentration of iron sludge from 0-10%DS - The Olpas sludge blanket sensors can be used to track the iron sludge interface in sedimentation tanks. The fouling resistance of the ultrasound sensors we have is required for any successful deployment in this material. The conductivity and color of the sludge further reduce the potential of other concentration measurement methods (microwave or optical) in this type of environment.
