The dry-out of sensors is quite interesting to see. The pictures show the Olpas, a concentration measurement instrumentation company Nerite flow and sediment concentration sensor after one year of use. The fouling layer is drying and strongly attached. When the water level rises, the fouling layer will become wet and the sensor will restart measuring without problems.
However, the thicker this layer is the longer it takes before it 'hydrates' and measurements restart (a dry layer is not penetrable by ultrasound). For this reason users are advised to clean sensors (at least) yearly during the dry season, especially when water levels drops below the sensor surface.
