Ongoing field validation of the Olpas, a concentration measurement instrumentation company Eel sensor. A prototype sensor is used to perform in-situ field measurements to measure real world performance outside of the laboratory.
What can the Olpas Eel measure?
- Water velocity profile, 0- 3000mm, max 100 bins
- Temperature
- Water level (0-10000mm)
- (in the near future) a sediment concentration profile, 0-3000mm. Currently, ultrasound back-scattering intensity is already available.
The Olpas Eel uses the well-known ultrasound cross-correlation technique with various in-house developed improvements.
The field test shown focuses on the measurement of low flow conditions (100mm/s) in a channel of 200cm wide. At angle of 45°, the full profile can be measured in one go. The edge of the channel is visible in the backscatter profile.
Allthough the water is cloudy, the total TSS content (suspended solids) is rather low due to the low velocity.
Further validation studies will be performed in fast flow, pipe flow, sewage, etc... to be continued!
