The setting nobody sent you an email about
Twitch's product chief was asked why AI training on creators' content was opt-out instead of opt-in.
He answered honestly, live, to about three thousand angry people: "If this was opt-in, nobody would opt in. That's honestly the answer."
The setting lets Amazon train generative AI on channel content.
It was on by default.
And it doesn't live on the dashboard where creators work — it's in account settings, under a privacy tab.
Most people reading this don't stream. Here is why it's still your problem.
That shape — on by default, disclosed as a toggle, never in an email — is the standard shape of an AI data default.
Your salesperson pastes a client quote into a chatbot.
Someone uploads a supplier contract to get it summarised.
A folder of CVs goes into a free tool to be sorted.
Each of those tools has a line in its settings deciding whether that content trains a model.
You didn't choose it. A product manager did, and his incentive is not yours.
Fifteen minutes fixes the not-knowing.
List the three AI tools your team actually uses. For each one: open the settings, find the data or training controls, read what they say, write it down.
Usually you can switch it off, or your paid tier already has.
This isn't paranoia.
It's about never having to say "we don't know" when a client asks where their documents went.
AI can prepare the work. A human still approves what leaves the building — including the data.
Which of your tools would you have to go and check right now?
