The AI Act deadlines just moved. Yours didn't.
On 27 July, the AI Omnibus entered into force across the EU.
The headline reads as a delay. It is more useful than that.
What moved is the high-risk end. Annex III systems now apply from 2 December 2027. High-risk AI built into physical products — machinery, toys, lifts — from 2 August 2028.
That is hiring algorithms and safety components. Not your inbox.
If you use AI to triage email, prepare a quote or check an invoice before it goes out, you were never on that clock. The transparency rules that do reach you have been enforced since 2 August.
So the Omnibus did not give you more time. It removed a reason to wait.
Simplifications that only covered SMEs now extend to small mid-caps. Sandbox access widens, including a new EU-level one. The AI literacy duty on companies is simplified, with the Commission and Member States taking more of it on.
The objection I expect: the rules keep changing, so wait until they settle.
They are settling in one direction — lighter for small companies, longer runways at the risky end. The part governing your daily work is the part standing still.
The legal unknown you were waiting on is smaller today than it was in July. Every quarter spent waiting is a quarter of compounding you do not get back.
AI prepares. A human approves. That was the compliant answer all along.
Was the regulation ever really the reason you were waiting?
