David Deno became chief executive of Cracker Barrel. His opening line is worth reading closely: "Delivering delicious food and exceptional experiences for our guests, while driving profitable growth."
Deno has spent forty years at the point where those two meet. CFO of Pizza Hut, then CFO and COO of Yum! Brands. CFO of Bloomin' Brands, Inc.' for seven years before taking the top job there.
That history matters here. Cracker Barrel runs roughly 660 company-owned stores across 43 states, cooking homestyle food at that scale. In that model the difference between a well-run kitchen and an average one reaches gross margin before it reaches anything else.
Growing a brand that size is largely about what happens between goods-in and the plate. Repeated across 660 kitchens, every day.
