1,000 citations for a paper that helped map where neutral-atom quantum computing could go. In 2020, Quantonation's Christophe Jurczak co-authored “Quantum computing with neutral atoms” alongside Loïc Henriet, Lucas Béguin, Adrien Signoles, Thierry Lahaye, Antoine Browaeys and Georges-Olivier REYMOND. At the time, #NeutralAtoms were still an emerging approach to quantum computing. Quantonation had invested in Pasqal at its creation the year before, and the paper set out to make the field more accessible: explaining the physics, the technology, potential applications and, importantly, taking a view on where it could go. Six years later, it has passed 1,000 citations — and much of what was prospective then is becoming reality. Processors have moved into the 100–1,000-qubit range, while Pasqal has demonstrated defect-free arrays of 1,024 atoms at 4 K. Fault-tolerant approaches are advancing, with a logical implementation outperforming its physical counterpart on an end-to-end machine-learning application. Individual atoms have now been trapped using light generated by a photonic integrated circuit.
