Canada's Bill C-22 heads to the Senate
Canada's Bill C-22 has cleared the House and is on its way to the Senate. The Lawful Access Act would force service providers to retain metadata for a year, enable backdoor capabilities, and expand data sharing with foreign governments.
Apple, Google, Meta, the EFF, and the Citizen Lab all oppose it. When platforms and privacy watchdogs line up on the same side, it's usually worth understanding why.
Metadata retention and backdoors rarely stay narrowly scoped once they're law.
