Estonia forest inventory shows timber-pressure warning
Teaser: Forest area and growing stock remain broadly stable, but managed-forest harvest has exceeded net growth for years.
Estonia’s latest forest inventory shows forest land at 2.36 million hectares and growing stock at about 466 million m³.
But the Environment Agency says harvesting in managed forests has exceeded net growth for around seven to eight years. The area dominated by conifers has also declined by around 32,000 hectares since 2016.
For sawmills and veneer producers, the long-term question is clear: how much harvest can the resource base support in the next decades?
