Robotics covers machines that sense their surroundings, decide what to do, and move something in the physical world.

Overview

A robot has three layers: sensors that perceive, software that decides, and actuators that move something. Machine learning reshaped the first two layers, which is why tasks with variation, picking objects that differ from each other or driving through a yard that is never laid out twice, became tractable where hand written rules had failed. Once perception works, the cost of a project moves to integration: grippers, fixtures, calibration, exception handling, and the risk assessment that decides whether a machine needs a fence or may share space with people. Inside the European Union that assessment is a legal gate, because Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 applies fully from 20 January 2027, repeals Directive 2006/42/EC, and sets requirements for machinery whose safety functions use artificial intelligence or show self evolving behaviour. Belgian capability sits in three kinds of place: Flanders Make works on sensors, actuators and robot vision for smart manufacturing, with funding from the Flemish government that makes it a regional instrument; Ghent University carries academic robotics and machine learning, where Francis Wyffels is an associate professor; and industrial operators such as the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, whose innovation function is led by Erwin Verstraelen, are where machines have to earn their cost. Agoria, led by Bart Steukers, is the federation side of that picture with a network of more than 2,200 Belgian companies, while the legal and ethical questions are studied by researchers such as Nathalie Smuha at KU Leuven and Oxford University.
