The Belgian tech ecosystem is the recycling loop that turns one generation of companies into the next: exits release money, people and know-how, which come back as angel cheques, funds and second-time founders.

The ecosystem label describes a recycling loop, in which capital, talent and know-how leave a company at an exit and come back as angel cheques, second-time founders, and hires who have already watched a company scale. The loop has three inputs that set its speed: how many exits actually close, how much of the proceeds stay local as angel or fund money, and whether research institutes keep pushing new companies into the pipeline. The research leg is concrete at imec in Leuven, which counts more than 300 catalysed tech startups that together raised about EUR 1 billion, and which reports its added value for Flanders rather than for Belgium as a whole. The recycling leg shows up in individual careers: Stijn Christiaens went from co-founding Collibra to more than 10 angel investments and an LP position in Syndicate One, Christophe Morbee combines running Besox with a General Partner seat at Newschool VC, and Robin Wauters pairs Tech.eu with co-founding BeCentral and Syndicate One. The exits stay the scarce input, and Jürgen Ingels puts the share of companies that reach 10 million euro in revenue at 0,3%.
