The AI infrastructure race has centred on datacentres, power, and water. The networks that carry the traffic they generate get far less attention. In the UK, mobile network performance ranks 57th globally, according to analysis of Opensignal data, behind every EU member state and every other G7 country. Senior telecoms executives now warn that slow 5G upgrades could leave the country unable to cope as AI traffic grows. The bottleneck is not new sites: 🏗️ 96% of one operator’s planned upgrades are on existing masts 📋 More than half of those need planning permission ⏱️ Approvals can take months, even for simple upgrades One executive expects connectivity to become a “national competitiveness issue”, in the way slow full-fibre rollout did. Your service mesh knows where to send a request. But does it know whether the transaction committed? A network timeout occurs. Your service mesh retries the request. But there is the problem: The original request may already have updated the database. The response simply never made it back. Now the same business operation could execute twice. This is why traffic reliability and transaction consistency are two different challenges. Service meshes help with routing, retries, timeouts, and circuit breaking. But they don't automatically know the commit outcome of your backend transactions. That's where additional safeguards matter. Idempotency can help prevent duplicate business effects. Transaction coordination can provide atomic outcomes across supported transactional resources. And transaction recovery helps resolve interrupted transactions after failures. Geotechnical site investigation, from beach to seabed. Last week, GEOxyz completed a nearshore geotechnical investigation for the Port of Ostend, deploying the Ammonite tracked CPT system developed by our US partner, Seafloor Geotech International. Over three days, Ammonite carried out CPT and vibrocore testing across the port area, travelling hundreds of metres from the beach directly into the sea. Its tracked design makes it particularly suited to challenging transition zones where conventional land based or marine equipment can be difficult to deploy. The campaign was managed by SEASOILS BV, GEOxyz’s in house geotechnical team, combining specialist expertise with a highly adaptable investigation platform. We also welcomed several clients on site to see the system in operation. Alongside technical presentations on CPT technology, calibration and the modular design of Ammonite, visitors were able to follow live testing and see the unit move between investigation locations and enter the water. A valuable demonstration of how the right combination of technology and geotechnical expertise can help close the gap between land and sea. Questions? Dit deden we in samenspraak met de koelfirma die deze systemen beheerd. Aangezien die koelfirma z’n toestellen nog steeds vanop afstand moet kunnen opvolgen hebben we ervoor gezorgd dat enkel voor hen de toegang wel nog mogelijk is. De lancering verliep goed. IT bouwde het intranet in een paar maanden op SharePoint, de homepage zag er goed uit, de nieuwswebpart werkte, en de directie was blij dat er geen extra licentiekosten boven op Microsoft 365 kwamen. Twaalf maanden later ziet het er anders uit, al kan niemand precies zeggen wanneer het misliep. De ontwikkelaar die het grootste deel bouwde, zit intussen op een ander project. Een platformupdate legde het evenementenoverzicht plat en het duurde een week om het probleem op te lossen, omdat niemand nog wist hoe alles in elkaar zat. Het communicatieteam heeft een lijst met vragen die alleen maar langer wordt. En medewerkers stellen op Teams stilaan weer vragen aan collega's die ze vroeger zelf konden opzoeken. Ik heb dat verhaal door mijn ervaring op het snijvlak van interne communicatie en IT vaak genoeg gezien om het patroon te herkennen. Het bouwen zelf was zelden het probleem. Wat vaak onderschat wordt, is alles wat daarna komt en hoe weinig daarvan met code te maken heeft.

On entend tout et n'importe quoi à propos du tragique accident de train sur la ligne Madrid-Séville. J'ai vécu en Espagne, j'ai travaillé dans les trains comme étudiant à 18 ans, et maintenant via Multitel, je suis impliqué quotidiennement dans notre département de services de tests et bancs de test pour la signalisation ferroviaire, qui travaille pour des clients dans le monde entier. Cet accident me touche tant personnellement que professionnellement. Ce qui est clair c'est que parler simplement d'"erreur humaine" à l'origine de l'accident est beaucoup trop court, d'autant qu'un des protagonistes, le conducteur, n'est plus là pour se défendre. Les systèmes de signalisation sont essentiellement "fault resistant". Ils doivent résister à des erreurs humaines, même à plusieurs. Il existe des modes de supervision, dont certains dégradés (utilisés dans ce cas, dû à une panne du système). C'est peut-être sur ce point qu'il faudra se pencher. Le système de signalisation actif sur la ligne était toujours le "LZB", ancien système d'origine allemande. Une migration vers le système standard européen ETCS était en cours mais pas encore opérationnelle. Pourtant, elle avait été commandée près de 5 ans plus tôt et aurai dû être terminée en début d'année. Est-ce qu'avec l'ETCS actif, cet accident aurait évité ? C'est un point plus intéressant de l'enquête, avec des apprentissage à tirer pour augmenter la sécurité de tous les systèmes actifs. Ce qui est clair est que la norme ETCS est une norme européenne qui est en train de devenir un standard mondial (avec des variantes et adaptations dans certains régions). Cela signifie naturellement plus de constructeurs qui l'implémentent, d'idées et initiatives pour l'améliorer, et une capacité de maintenance évolutive plus importante. A l'opposé, on peut aussi plaider pour le fait que le système LZB est encore largement utilisé en Allemagne, sans connaître d'accident majeur récent. Bref, peu importe la conclusion, mais l'erreur à ne pas commettre serait de se contenter d'accuser le simple facteur humain, et continuer comme si de rien n'était. J'adresse en tout cas mes condoléances et soutien à toutes les victimes et leurs proches.

The challenge was to combine 𝟓𝐆 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐃𝐀𝐒, while supporting railway connectivity and reaching users more than 𝟐𝟓 𝐤𝐦 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐨 𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐞 without performance degradation. 🚆📡 Before taking the solution live, our engineers recreated the deployment conditions in our shielded RF lab in Brussels, simulating the DAS fibre lengths and fine-tuning the RAN configuration. Fibre is reaching more buildings in Belgium. But getting fibre to the building is only part of the job. The line may reach the basement or communications room, but tenants still depend on the network inside the building. Cabling, WiFi coverage, separate tenant networks and ongoing support all need to be considered. Property teams should also check whether lift phones, alarm systems and intercoms still rely on copper lines. As operators phase out copper services, some of this equipment may need to be moved to an alternative connection to keep working properly. When fibre becomes available for your building, ask:  • Where will the fibre connection end, and what equipment is included?  • Is the existing cabling ready to support the new connection?  • Which systems still rely on copper, and who is responsible for replacing those connections? For most of the last century, owning a security meant holding paper. Runners carried certificates across Wall Street by hand, and by 1968 there was so much of it that the exchange closed on Wednesdays just to catch up. The fix was one central depository. From 1973, the certificates stopped moving and ownership became a book entry at DTC. That record went electronic and has quietly carried the US market ever since. This week it took its next form. The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) took its Tokenization Service live, and securities held at DTC can now exist as tokens, with the same ownership rights and investor protections. What it opens up is easy to picture. A security that moves between registered wallets at 2 a.m. on a Sunday, not only in market hours. Ownership that updates as it changes hands. ⛓️ We entered digital assets more than a decade ago, waiting for a moment like this. It’s here. Preparing for ECOMONDO that takes place next week in Rimini, I opened the map of every site managed on Energis. 60,000+ sites. 17 countries. My first reaction was pride. My second was more honest: most of these circles are not our work. Behind them are energy consultancies, facility management firms, engineering offices and energy professionals that do energy monitoring and energy management for entire portfolios, often thousands of sites, across several countries. Every day they turn millions of meter readings into decisions, and they stand behind the results. ⚡ 𝗪𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗱𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗷𝗼𝗯. This one gets a little technical. And a little dramatic. Brace yourselves. 😉 Because if you’re still running ingress-nginx, we need to talk. It may still be routing traffic perfectly fine. But it’s retired, which means no more bug fixes or security patches. So for every managed services customer running ingress-nginx, a migration was on the agenda. Your platform, our responsibility. Remember? The plan was to move straight to Gateway API. But for one customer, our chosen implementation didn’t support a feature they already relied on in production. We weren’t going to leave an unpatched controller running while waiting for that feature. So we found another way forward. You’ll have to swipe through the carousel for that. 👀 At another customer, we could move directly to Gateway API. Their requirements were supported, so the same obstacle never came up. That’s where working across different technologies and environments pays off. We see which approaches work, where they get stuck and when a different route makes more sense.
